Khotan

Woven in the culturally Central Asian Xinjiang region of China, this carpet takes a novel approach to traditional design from the area. An array of several classic Khotan medallions, more typically spaced throughout the field, are here placed within a grid composed of traditional border design. This particular articulation seems more reminiscent of classical Chinese textiles than of regional carpet design but the result is refined and highly successful. Colors have naturally faded with age.
