This extraordinary and quite atypical field design for an East Turkestan carpet is strangely reminiscent of sixteenth and seventeenth century classical examples from Anatolia. Perhaps the similarities are evidence of an older common tradition between Turkish weavers in Anatolia and the Turkic speaking weavers of the oasis towns of Eastern Turkestan? Whatever the case, the repeat quatrafoil design of this piece using two blues, pink, aubergine and white is exceptionally pleasing.
