This dramatic Luri sofreh weaves a highly graphic image with a central cruciform design formed from latch hook diamonds. These motifs are drawn in thick, lustrous pile against a flat woven camel field. A ‘sofreh’ is a type of presentation cloth that often fills the niche of a dinning room table for the nomadic groups of Persia. This large square-shaped example would have underscored the wealth and means of its owner. The traditional camel field is framed by a dark coffee flat woven border, upon which additional latch hooks are woven within a madder red lattice. The use of pile against a flat woven ground adds contrast and a sculptural flair, heightened by the use of color.
