Balancing large-scale design with intricate drawing, this elegant Mohajeran Sarouk replicates the elegance of fine nineteenth-century Persian textiles in thick lustrous wool pile. Against a classic indigo field, large leaves and palmettes are formed using garlands and clusters of smaller blossoms and flowers. The ochre tones used represent an older tradition of Sarouk weaving pre-dating the painted ‘American Sarouks’ of the Deco Period. These later pieces were painted a rose-red to gain favor in the emerging American market of that time. While these later pieces have their charm, this example is imbued with an extra sense of refinement. Collection of Norton Katz.
