Navajo weavings have been classified into categories by non-Navajo traders and scholars. This design is often named a “Ganado” style: bordered weavings with red backgrounds and brown, grey, white, and black geometric designs. However, it is likely that this style was actually developed by a particular weaver or family of weavers who lived in Ganado, Arizona, in the 19th century. It then became popular, spreading to other weavers in this area, who were eager to adopt the originator’s design style and color palette.
