Ningxia, just east of the Gansu corridor on the Silk Road, was perhaps the most significant weaving center in China. This piece was woven as a seating runner for a Buddhist temple and consists of four separate seating squares. The design consists of an arrangement of lotus flowers, an iconography with specific Buddhist implications symbolizing enlightenment.
