Nineteenth century Oushak carpets woven near Anatolia’s Aegean coast are particularly known for their thick and lustrous wool. The region around Ushak was an important Ottoman weaving center from at least as early as the sixteenth century. During the later nineteenth, weavers here came under the influence of Persian design types which had become popular at this time. This piece uses an all-over variant of the ‘Herati pattern’. The mellow palette is the perfect complement to such soft a texture.
