Saddle bags have had an often difficult existence transitioning from specific utilitarian objects in the Near East and Central Asia where they were made to other forms in Western interiors. As they were imported into Europe and America the pile faces of double saddle bags, tent bags, and pillows were often removed to form small mats and throws. This pair of Qashqai bags, while separated, have been preserved almost completely and were turned into pillows. The knotted bagfaces make use of a classic diamond design while the kilim backs are decorated with simple but elegant colorful stripes. As their current form has served well to preserve them, they remain stuffed as pillows.
