Qashqai gabbeh rug

This graphic south Persian Gabbeh exemplifies the richness of Qashqai tribal weavings. Woven over one-hundred years ago probably for domestic consumption, it uses soft wool, saturated vegetally derived colors, and bold geometric composition to great success. While the basic medallion format recalls a variety of Persian traditions, the emphasis on color over form and the angular geometry of both ornament and composition exemplifies the best antique gabbehs.
