Senneh kilims are known for their exacting detail and fine weave, traits shared with the pile rugs of the region. Typically, these flatwoven pieces use an over-all lattice design. This kilim runner, however, draws repeat stylized roses, known as “gol-i farang” or “Western roses”. This design was popular throughout Persia, particularly Senneh and Bidjar in the later nineteenth century, having been adopted from French models. It is seldom seen in kilims of any type but successfully and abstractly undertaken in a painterly manner in this piece using autumnal colors of gold, greens, and reds. A more standard geometric golden border frames the piece and contrasts nicely with the deep indigo field.
