Serapi Carpet

This exceptionally elegant Serapi carpet from Northwest Persia draws a central medallion within a square-shaped field. A central ivory diamond shape is spaciously drawn at the center of the red quatrafoil medallion. Drawn with sinuous curvilinear flow and with larger scale vegetal ornament the aesthetic is almost kaleidoscopic as a deep indigo ground gives way to layers of ochre-red and ivory. The central medallion is echoed in the corner-pieces perfectly balancing light and dark.
