Soft wool and a soft palette join in this lovely niched Oushak rug from western Anatolia. The columns and spandrels as well as the palmette and leaf pattern of the border all trace to prayer rug design of the Kula Transylvanian type of the seventeenth century. This piece may have been made as a prayer rug or perhaps more likely as an elegant scatter or wall hanging with a classical Ottoman look for the turn-of-the-century Western market.
