This magnificent over-sized Tabriz carpet paints an over-all field using the so-called Herati pattern. Delicate feather-shaped palm fronds extend horizontally in a lattice grid with rosette centers. The main border of this piece uses classic Persian palmettes drawn in larger scale flanked by similar palm fronds as those found in the field. Tabriz carpets from the late nineteenth century are known for their muted palette of creams and beige. This piece does not disappoint and includes subtle accents of green, red and pale blue which add a further layer of richness. Unlike so many inferior pieces from the early 20th century available on the market using the appellation “antique Tabriz” this piece has not been bleached or color stripped and maintains the original elegance conceived by its weavers.
