Tabriz

Tabriz carpets of the nineteenth century are some of the most regal Persian weavings of their time. This piece does not disappoint. A classic medallion composed of layers of lobed pendants and vegetal scroll floats against a lush red ground guarded by equally elaborate and finely drawn corner-pieces. Arabesque tracery culminating in floral bursts and plumes is set against the field as related ornament is drawn within the corner-pieces. Just as richly decorated are the borders, themselves drawn with a rendition of palmettes and floral clusters derived from classical seventeenth and eighteenth century Persian models. Unlike so many pieces labeled ‘antique Tabriz’ available on the market today, this piece has not been artificially faded or ‘antique washed’. This is the real deal.
