This finely woven Hajji Jalili quality Tabriz is woven with intricate floral drawing and employing a classic Persian central medallion. While the narrow proportions of this piece are rare for nineteenth-century Tabriz carpets, they are traditional for older pieces from the seventeenth and nineteenth century as well as several other types of nineteenth-century Persian kelleh carpets. This suggests that this piece was woven for the domestic market, most probably as a special commission for a local person of means. Unlike the majority of Tabriz pieces offered to the contemporary decorative market today which have been artificially faded or muted, this piece is the real deal. The cartouche form created in the deep indigo field is reminiscent of the repeating shapes found in the border. Further balance is achieved by the layering of dark and light components from the central medallion through the field and corner pieces to the border.
