This elegant carpet was woven in the vicinity of the Persian capital city of Tehran. Both the ivory field and borders are filled with clusters of potted flowering roses, a flower which has a special significance in Persian culture, particularly poetry. Such potted plant imagery is seen throughout Persian weaving in the 19th century and may ultimately be traced back to the ‘vase carpets’ of the 16th and 17th centuries. It is unusual for a Persian carpet, or any Oriental rug for that matter, to draw the same motifs in both the field and border.
