In the late 19th and early 20th century, Navajo weavers began to experiment with minimal, square, and vertically oriented designs, as seen here. The shift away from horizontally oriented designs made square designs less dynamic than vertical ones. To imbue these textiles with movement, the weaver adds different shades of yarn, creating wavy lines within the colored squares.
