Veramin is an oasis town situated on the outskirts of Tehran. The distinctive weavings from this area are thought to largely be the work of settled Kurds, though several tribal and ethnic groups make up the population. Veramin torbas, such as this bagface, are known for their curious appropriation of Turkmen guls. Here, the two Turkemen guls are rendered quite faithfully in the field, but with a varied color scheme. This format is uncommon, and the guls here are drawn without the traditional ‘quartering’ of Turkmen examples. The handle of this piece is soft and supple as a result of the weaver’s use of superior wool and a single wefted construction.
