Yarkand

Woven in the oasis city of Yarkand in Chinese Turkestan in the first decades of the twentieth century, this rug is characteristic of a generation of weavings that experimented with bright bold colors, large-scale graphics and a new geometric sensibility towards traditional local and Chinese motifs from further east that seems to almost anticipate Art Deco.
