This rug was probably woven for the domestic Persian market to be the main rug in a traditional four rug room setting. The overall “boteh” field design is emulating an ancient design often seen in more formal Kirman carpets that were woven to the south. More than any other Persian nomadic tribe, the Afshar emulated floral designs seen in urban workshop carpets. This rug has a nice range of naturally dyed colors. The main border offers a unique treatment of two leaf forms normally seen as part of a “herati” field design , but in this case, the leaves are joined without the usual flower head in between.
