A ‘sofreh’ is a textile used as a surface for eating and presentation, much like a table in the Western world. Strange as it may seem, this Afshar sofreh is made with a plaid woolen twill field. Some of the earliest surviving plaid textiles, dating over 3000 years, were discovered even further east in the Taklamakan desert in what is now western China. Among Persian nomads, the technique is relatively common among the Qashqai of southwest Persia. This piece represents a rare instance of its use among the Afshar.
