Woven against a rustic camel ground, this Afshar rug draws two stylized potted plants, from top and bottom, each culminating at the center in colorful floral bursts of indigo, green, burgundy, and tangerine. This imagery, borrowed from urban Persian workshop carpets and Persian decorative arts of the late Qajar period in general, is surprisingly popular in Afshar tribal rugs, and despite layers of transformation and adaptation, the original neoclassical aesthetic may still be seen. See an older but related example in Cecil Edwards, ‘The Persian Carpet,’ page 277 plate 275.
