Afshar rug

Far from being removed from Persian society during the 18th and 19th centuries, the nomadic tribesman of the empire remained vital contributors. Many grew rich or maintained their wealth during this time. Under Nader Shah (r. 1736-49), a brief Afsharid dynasty was established, only to be supplanted by the Qajars, another Persian dynasty with nomadic Turkic roots. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that these influential nomads were keenly aware of the increasing international tastes of 19th century Persia. This fine small carpet draws a majestic flowering plant against an elegant ivory ground. The flowerpot itself forms the bottom of an intricate flowering garland, complete with a pair of doves. Neoclassical flavor, albeit with a distinct Persian filter, resonates throughout the aesthetic.
