Creating a distinct sense of motion, reciprocal bands of ‘sirga,’ linked pinwheel motifs, cross the field of this Afshar sumak. Cotton white provides distinct contrast against the madder red wool, and the alternating colors of the delicate cross elements enhances this sense. The piece is topped by multicolored flat woven fasteners and its original fastening loops. Tanavoli, Parviz. Afshar: Tribal Weavers from Southeast Iran. Tehran: MATN, 2010. pg. 162, pl. 87.
