With a camel ground punctuated by rows of scorpion-shaped ‘boteh’ paisleys, this small Afshar sumak rug combines the elegance of a fine textile with a more rustic tribal aesthetic. The rug’s diverse color is refined and balanced, and cotton white is used effectively for contrast. Two panels of colorful eight-pointed stars are drawn at the top and the bottom. This format, combined with the size of the piece, suggests that it may have been made as a ‘sofreh,’ or serving cloth.
