Cruciform eight-pointed stars are drawn within white-framed boxes on this Afshar salt bag, which is woven in sumak technique. Each star is divided into diamond and rhomboid sections, almost giving an impression of cloisonné work. Paired birds, of the type seen in the borders of Afshar pile rugs, are drawn in the border and possibly give a clue as to the origins of this motif.
