Afshar sumak salt bag

This colorful Afshar salt bag is woven in sumak flat weave. The field is composed of three bands of repeat geometric ornament extending to three single ornaments drawn in the neck. A large vine-scroll border on a golden ground oscillates around the perimeter and is paired with a thin delicate floral guard border. A pair of cowrie shells, trade items from the Gulf or Indian Ocean, is fastened at the two joint areas between the main portion of the bag and its neck.
