Salt bags were essential for the herders of south Persia. Water was scarce, and herders gave salt to flock animals to encourage them to drink when water was available, and to retain water while on the move. Afshar salt bags come in several shapes and sizes, and this piece is larger than most. The red kilim back is embroidered on two places along the central spine, each with a small diamond. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Corwin.
