This highly refined Amritsar carpet combines classic persianate drawing with a local Indian color sensibility that harkens back to Mughal predecessors from the seventeenth century. Large scale highly detailed palmettes are drawn within a mirrored lattice pattern on an ivory ground. While corner pieces are used and the composition is highly centralized, a sense of perfect scale is achieved without the use of a true medallion. Golds and several lighter blues accent the piece throughout and a distinctively Indian brick-red serves both as a bold ground color for the border as well as highlighting some of the more finely drawn vine-scroll ornament and central quatrefoil within the field. The result is both elegant and compelling.
