Aubusson, in central France, has been a weaving center from at least the 16th century when Flemish weavers arrived in the city and reinvigorated an already well established industry. This late 19th century piece is drawn with the neoclassical aesthetic of the previous century, as garlands of roses are traced creating an eight-pointed star design with wreaths in the four corners. Greek revival style palmettes are placed above each wreath in the far corners, corresponding to similar motifs within the central square.
