This majestic Baluch rug was woven in the north east Persian province of Khorosan. With its fiery tone on tone reds and modulated polychromatic blues, it most likely hails from the Torbat region, where some of the best Baluch group rugs were woven. The weavers of these Baluch rugs borrowed extensively from their Persian and Central Asian neighbors to create an aesthetic all their own. This piece uses a field comprised of repeat hexagons. This classic Baluch design has its origin in flat weaves, particularly Baluch sumaks, before being rendered in knotted pile in the 19th century.
