Planted against a midnight blue field, abundant rows of flowering plants shimmer in radiant color. This late nineteenth-century Fereghan Sarouk carpet recalls a tradition of Persian shrub carpets going back at least to the seventeenth century. The garden is a powerful metaphor in both Persian art and literature, and this blossoming composition is appropriately framed by a cartouche border inscribed with classical Persian verse.
