This elegant Fereghan Sarouk carpet traces thin abstract foliage in deep dark indigo forming a large-scale reciprocal tile design of lobed medallions and stepped quatrefoils against a rose madder ground. Within each of these sections, delicate flowering plants are organized around central rosettes. The all-over design created is focussed on the only complete central lobed device giving the illusion of a medallion. This open design, along with aspects of palette and general elegance seem interestingly reminiscent of Mughal Indian pieces of the 17th century. Ultimately, these similarities may stem from the dependence of Indian design on Persian prototypes during the 17th and 18th centuries. Whatever the case, the inherent splendor of this central Persian carpet is undeniable.
