During the 19th century, the city of Kirman in southeast Persia was closer to what was then British India than to the Persian capital of Tehran. Both rugs and textiles were woven in Kirman reflecting a distinct Mughal Indian influence which had in turn been shaped by Persian models of the 17th and 18th centuries. This small but dynamic Kirman rug draws on textile designs forming a central medallion and corner-pieces from groupings of ‘boteh’ paisleys. The magenta color is most likely derived from lac dye imported from India.
