Large elongated double-bags executed in mixed technique are some of the most ubiquitous Persian tribal weavings from the turn of the century and first half of the twentieth century. This piece is a pleasant departure from the norm. Drawing in both the sumak and pile sections is crisp and vivid with the “Memling guls” of the pile section rendered in soft lush blues, brick red, and green against a rare and highly successful gold ground. Animal trains and animal-headed ornament predominates throughout the bands of the white sumak, while rows of elongated trees and fronds flank alternating rosettes in the main sumak section. With such exceptional execution and beauty this piece deserves the tile, “Best of Type”.
