This exceptionally pleasing Persian rug melds elegance with happiness using the classic arrangement of a central medallion within a cartouche-shaped field. Against a rose ground a network of white blossoms traces the floral medallion, palmette anchors, and terminating pendants. Of particular merit are the two small golden lion faces used as joints on the axes linking the central medallion with both pendants. Indeed, these same pendants are each formed with bird heads in profile extending from their left and right sides. While woven in the western Persian village of Malayer outside of Hamadan, this rug embodies much of the drawing, color, and fineness of weave associated with Feraghan Sarouk weavings. Hence the market name, “Malayer Sarouk”.
