Melas

Rugs from Melas on the Aegean coast of Asia Minor are known for their frequent use of soft colors and often lighter palettes. This piece makes use of classic Melas rose and soft greens and yellow. The sturdier construction of this piece, however, may point to an influence from central Anatolia. The rug is accented throughout with delicate vegetal ornament. Particularly pleasing, is the well-spaced strand of flowering plants drawn in the center of the field.
