The matching fields of this pair of Afshar bag faces draw a single section of what originated as a row of repeat design. A central ‘ashik’ form demarcates the centers, with arrows extending from the cardinal directions. Branching diagonally are composite red and white motifs, perhaps drawn as some form of abstracted blossom. This distinctive form, combining angular geometric and organic elements, is quite popular among Afshar weavers, as is the main border used in these bag faces. The border is comprised of colorful linked clover-like leaves meandering against a white ground.
