This highly graphic Shahsevan kilim combines repeat reciprocal design with saturated contrasting color. The structure of various flat weave techniques allow a weaver to generate a host of differing repeat geometric patterns. This variety of techniques is seen in this kilim, as long columns of space are indented and punctuated with branches of rounded octagons that form mirror images from negative space. On another level, this piece mimics, albeit abstractly, the notion of a central medallion with borders echoing its varying contours. This latter notion is reinforced by the weaver’s choice of color, a deep indigo for the central column while madder red and complimentary modulated greens color the field and sides. Great care has been taken to match the color of the warp with that of the weft used to form the design. Small embroidered geometric embellishments add a rustic flair to this simple but sophisticated composition.
