Diamond forms outlined with latch-hooks are some of the most iconic geometric ornament types found in the village weavings of the Caucasus. This elegant Shirvan rug draws a central column made up of large latch-hook diamond forms and is flanked on either side by smaller columns of the same ornament. Spacing between the elements is open and balanced creating large half diamonds against the terra-cotta field formed from negative space. The repeat motif found in the border represents a Caucasian geometricized variant of motifs that make up the so-called ‘Holbein’ border type of classical Anatolian and Persian rugs of at least the 15th century.
