This small Tibetan rug is woven with thick, lustrous, and exceedingly soft Himalayan wool. Three small medallions, the top and bottom each centered by a rosette and the middle by an eight-pointed star, float against a deep indigo ground. A so-called ‘frogs’ foot’ pattern of white motifs is drawn throughout the filed. While Tibetan rugs have their own autochthonous tradition, a strong influence from 18th century Chinese rugs and textiles may be seen as well. Indeed, this piece makes use of two Chinese inspired border designs along with Chinese inspired fret-work corner-pieces.
