Ziegler Mahal carpet

This antique Ziegler Mahal carpet is simply fantastic. In keeping with the famous nineteenth century Anglo-Swiss firm’s classic aesthetics and mission of weaving some of the finest carpets in Persia specifically for the European market, large scale Persianate vegetal motifs are drawn against an ivory field. The darker ochre border provides a sense of balance and is drawn with a rotating tree and shrub design that goes back to classical Persian carpets of the 17th century.

Additionally, this piece has great provenance as it was bought originally from Harvey Nichols store in London 1896, the sold at the famous Elveden Hall auction in England in the 1980’s, which put Zieglers on the map. From there it went to Dildarian in New York, who then sold it.
